moving truck rental requirements

Driving a moving truck can give you a feeling of accomplishment, but there are rental requirements that must be met, first.

When renting a moving truck, there are several rental requirements that must be met for all drivers. Regardless of the company, you will need a valid driver’s license in your state. The laws about driving requirements in your state can be found at this (non-government operated) website: dmv.org.

The additional requirements for operating a moving truck vary by company. Below, we offer the most up-to-date requirements from the three most popular rental companies. Be sure to call the company of your choice (if not listed) to be sure you meet the minimum requirements before you make a reservation.

What is the Age Requirement?

To rent a U-Haul moving truck, a driver must be at least 18 years of age. To rent a U-Haul trailer, the renter must be at least 16 years of age.

What forms of ID/ credentials do I need in the U.S.?

Two forms of identification, including a driver’s license are needed for a U-Haul rental.

Can I add additional drivers?

Yes. The primary driver of U-Haul truck may give permission to any other driver to operate the rental; so long as the additional driver is at least 18 years of age, and possesses a valid driver’s license. There is no fee for additional drivers.

If you are unsure of your rental companies rules and rental requirements, it is always better to give them a quick phone call when you are in doubt. Remember, you are responsible for your rental truck, so never grant anyone permission to drive who does not meet the minimum requirements.
