WhatToExpectWhenReturningAMovingTruck1The boxes have been unpacked and you’ve settled into your new destination, congratulations! You’ve even started thinking about which gifts you’ll give to your moving helpers. The last item on your to-do list is to “return the moving van”. Here’s what to expect when returning a U-Haul truck.

Remove all personal items. EquipmentReturnSign

Make sure you’ve taken out every item from the truck rental. Check under the seats to make sure you’ve picked up all personal items as well as taking trash items, like bottles and food items, out. If your truck is dirty upon return a cleaning fee will be tacked onto your charges.

Bring proper paperwork.

Don’t forget the signed paperwork in your new home. If you have any questions or would like to address specific charges, then the paperwork will serve as a guide for all reference points. Bring with you proper identification and payment forms as in-town rentals and one-ways are charged in different ways. Also, the representatives at your location can answer all questions in person or over the phone.

Return vehicle on time (and with gas).

Follow all drop-off signs at the location to which you are returning (right). Make sure to read your contract carefully. It will have the specific time that the truck rental is due. Don’t forget to refuel the U-Haul van to the agreed upon amount as well. Returning a late moving truck that isn’t properly fueled will result in additional fees.

Follow all posted signs.

Drop off all equipment at the proper assigned location. Most locations will have directional signs that lead to the proper drop-off point. These signs will guide you to the correct location where a representative will then come and greet you. If there are not any signs, ensure that you’ve parked the moving van in a legal parking area as customers are responsible for all parking fees, tow charges and penalties.

Give it a final run through.

Secure all additional moving supplies, such as dollies and blankets, in the truck’s cab or in the trailer body in a folded and clean manner. Look through the trailer one final time to make sure all moving boxes  and other materials have been removed or donated to U-Haul’s “take a box leave a box center”. Lock all doors and secure all padlocks before walking away from the vehicle.

Return the keys.

If returning during normal business hours, proceed to the U-Haul offices to return the truck keys. If you have any questions about returning your equipment, the customer service representatives are always available to help.

Return after business hours.

If returning after normal business hours, locate the key box that says “after hours” where you will safely place the truck keys. If returning after hours you will have simply follow all posted parking signs and drop off your keys in the drop box while following the posted instructions.

You’ve successfully completed each list off of your to-do list now! Make sure to always keep a copy of your contract as well as the names and numbers of the U-Haul representatives you worked with to contact them in the future if anything should arise. They can answer any and all questions before and after your trip.

If I am driving from Ontario to Alberta, is there a drop-off fee and if so, how much would it be?

    • Paige E says:

Hi Jean-thanks for your question. You would need to provide a little bit more information for your move- what size truck or trailer you need, what date, etc. For a full quote for you move, you can visit uhaul.com. If you have any other questions, let us know. As for a drop off fee, as long as you return your rental to the location determined on your rental contract, there would be no additional fee.

How much time do i have to return 26 ft truck im moving fron calgary to victoria which is a twelve hr drive. So how much unloading time do we have?

  3. Randi says:

Do I have to wash the truck prior to returning it?

    • Paige E says:

It is not recommended to wash the truck, however, we do ask the truck to be returned in the same condition in as it was rented.

  4. Jeri says:

Is there a standard pick-up and return time for a 26 foot truck?

    • Paige E says:

Pick up and return times are based on equipment availability. When making a reservation for U-Haul equipment, you can select the time needed for the move (8hrs, 10hrs, 24hrs etc.). The scheduling team will then determine your best options based on that preference and call to confirm the pick up time and location.

Do i need to return the truck to where I rented it? Or can I return it in any U-haul location ? Thank you.

    • Paige E says:

Depending on the type of move, if your contract states In-Town move, you will need to return it back to the same location. However, if your contract states One-Way Move, you are able to return it to a different location but at the specified drop off location.

  6. Whitney says:

I’ve always gotten money back when returning a moving truck. ( he estimated mileage was higher than we used ect) except this time. I rented a 20′ one way truck returned it on time and only used about 20 miles returned with a full tank. I paid 101$ is this correct?

    • Paige E says:

Thank you for bringing to our attention. If you email your concern to uhaul_cares@uhaul.com, the team will be able to review and look into this further for you. Please also include your contract number along with any additional details about your recent moving experience.

    Renting a 24 or 26′ @ .80/mile how is gas charged?

    • Paige E says:

U-Haul does not charge for fuel, however, the amount of fuel that is dispatched at the time of pick up will need to be return at the same level at the time of drop off to avoid any fuel fees. The MPG for the 24′ is 8mpg and the 26′ truck is 10mpg.

  8. Sayeeta says:

Are the trucks routinely cleaned after each use – I’m asking in particular because I’m concerned about bed bugs. Or would that only be in individual cases based on a reported case of bed bugs?

    • laura gojara says:

The last UHaul truck i rented had cockroaches in it. They had me return it immediately and gave me a different one. What UHaul did about the roaches i do not know.

  9. laura gojara says:

If i fail to properly clean/sweep the truck how much will i be charged??

    • Paige says:

Hi Laura, There is no set cleaning fee. It is based on how much time it takes the U-Haul receiving store to clean out the equipment. We recommend you ensure that all personal items are removed from the vehicle, double check to make sure all trash is disposed of properly and to sweep out the back of the truck out before returning.
